The Jade hardware wallet is designed to be a user-friendly and secure way to store your cryptocurrencies. It's a compact device that's small enough to fit in your pocket.

The Jade wallet supports a wide range of cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin. You can store up to 100 different assets on the device.

To set up your Jade wallet, you'll need to download and install the accompanying software. This will guide you through the process of creating a new wallet or restoring an existing one.

The Jade wallet comes with a built-in screen and a single button for navigation. This makes it easy to use and understand, even for those who are new to cryptocurrency storage.

Key Features

The Blockstream Jade hardware wallet is packed with impressive features that make it a top choice for Bitcoin users. One of its standout features is the built-in camera, which enables fully air-gapped transactions.

This means you can make secure transactions without connecting the wallet to any other device. The camera allows you to scan QR codes for transaction data, ensuring a high level of security.

The Jade hardware wallet is also fully open source, giving users the freedom to modify and customize the software. This level of transparency is rare in the industry and provides an added layer of security.

The wallet's user-friendly interface features a high-resolution display and intuitive button controls, making it easy to navigate and confirm transaction details.

Some of the key features of the Jade hardware wallet include:

  • Camera for fully air-gapped transactions
  • Fully open source
  • Full-color screen with QR code support
  • Hardware Wallet Interface (HWI) support for compatibility with popular wallet apps and Bitcoin Core
  • Rate limited PIN protection using virtual secure element
  • 240 mAh battery
  • USB-C and Bluetooth connectivity for use with iOS devices
  • Advanced Liquid asset support

Setup and Configuration

To set up your Jade hardware wallet, start by restoring or creating a new wallet, and choose a 12-word or 24-word option from the advanced menu.

You'll need to connect the device to the Green Wallet, which may report that the device is "not initialised". Don't worry, this is a common error.

Click the "Blockstream" tab on the left, and then "Setup Jade" beside the Bitcoin Singlesig icon to resolve the issue.

You'll then see your Accounts, including the Main account, which is a Legacy account for addresses that start with "1".

Security

The Jade hardware wallet prioritizes security, but it takes a different approach compared to the BitBox02. Blockstream Jade virtualizes the benefits of a secure chip by using an external PIN server, which may be a concern for some users.

This means that users have to rely on Blockstream's own PIN server, which could be a single point of failure if it becomes unavailable. However, users can still access their funds using their recovery phrase.

The BitBox02, on the other hand, features a Secure Chip on board, adding an extra layer of protection against physical attacks on the device. This dual-chip architecture combines the benefits of running fully open-source firmware and a dedicated secure chip.

About Passphrases

You can create a wallet with a seed phrase, a passphrase, and a derivation path, which generates 4.3 billion receiving addresses.

The derivation path acts like a second passphrase, so it's best to leave it as the default, usually m/84'/0'/0', even for advanced users.

If you write down the derivation path during wallet creation, it's good practice to keep it safe, although recovering the default numbers won't be difficult if you lose it.

Every time you turn on the Jade device, you'll have access to the original 4.3 billion addresses belonging to the seed, without a passphrase.

You can apply any passphrase you want, up to 100 characters, to create a fresh new set of addresses, derived from the original seed phrase and passphrase.

The Jade device forgets the original addresses when you apply a passphrase, so you'll need to apply it again to get back to that wallet.

All wallets disappear from memory when you turn off the device, but the seed remains safe.

To get your passphrase wallet back, you'll need to apply the passphrase again, and you can do this on a new device if you lose the original one.

You can buy a new device, restore your seed, and get your original wallet back, as well as your passphrase wallets.

Your bitcoin is not bound to the Jade device, but to the BIP-39 protocol, which allows you to restore your wallet on a new device.

Passed 12 Tests

Having passed 12 rigorous security tests, one of the most critical security measures is encryption. Encryption is a process that converts plaintext into unreadable ciphertext, making it virtually impossible for hackers to access sensitive information.

These tests have shown that encryption can be breached if the keys are not properly managed. In fact, a study found that 60% of companies have experienced a data breach due to weak encryption keys.

Encryption is not the only security measure that has been tested. Firewalls have also been put to the test, and the results show that they can be effective in blocking malicious traffic. However, they can be bypassed if not configured correctly.

The importance of security testing cannot be overstated. In fact, it's estimated that 70% of companies that have been hacked were not running security tests. This highlights the need for regular security testing to identify vulnerabilities before they can be exploited.

Secure Chip

The BitBox02 comes with a Secure Chip on board, adding protection against physical attacks on the device and enabling other security features.

This Secure Chip is a dedicated component that works in tandem with the device's main processing unit, creating a dual-chip architecture that provides an extra layer of security.

The dual-chip architecture is a key feature of the BitBox02, allowing it to run fully open-source firmware while still benefiting from the security provided by the Secure Chip.

This approach is a happy medium, pioneered by the BitBlock, and ensures that there is no single point of failure in the device's security.

In contrast, the Blockstream Jade does not come with a physical Secure Chip, instead relying on a virtualized approach that uses an external PIN server to provide a similar level of security.

However, this approach has its downsides, including the need to rely on Blockstream's own PIN server, which can be a concern if the server becomes unavailable.

Fortunately, the Blockstream Jade does provide a recovery phrase that users can use to access their funds directly, should the PIN server become unavailable.

Package Inclusions

The package inclusions for the Jade hardware wallet are quite comprehensive. You'll receive the Blockstream Jade device itself.

A USB Type-C to USB Type-A cable is also included, which is necessary for connecting to your Android device by cable. However, you may need to source your own USB Type-C to Micro USB or USB Type-C to USB Type-C cable, depending on your device's requirements.

The package also includes a recovery phrase sheet, which is an essential component of the Jade hardware wallet's security features. This sheet contains your unique recovery phrase, which you'll need to keep safe.

You'll also find a quickstart guide in the package, which will help you get started with setting up and using your Jade hardware wallet. And, as a nice touch, you'll receive a Blockstream sticker.

Comparing Backups

Both the Blockstream Jade and the BitBox02 follow the industry standard BIP-39 when creating and restoring backups with 12 or 24 recovery words.

The Blockstream Jade creates wallets with 12 recovery words by default, while the BitBox02 offers 24 words as the standard option, with an alternative option to create 12 words instead.

The BitBox02 features a microSD card slot that creates a backup of the user's wallet on the supplied microSD card, which is just as potent as the regular recovery words.

This microSD card backup can be created and restored within seconds, fully ruling out user errors and greatly improving the user experience.

Comparing User Interfaces

The user interface of a device can make or break the experience. An efficient user interface is not just about making a device easier to use, it's also an integral part of security.

The BitBox02 features a minimalistic and responsive user interface that simplifies the complexities of managing your coins. This is a great example of how a well-designed interface can help prevent costly mistakes and enhance the overall security experience.

The device has an OLED screen and touch sensors on the side, enabling intuitive touch, slide and hold gestures for navigation. This makes it easy to use and interact with the device.

In comparison, the Blockstream Jade has a color LCD screen, which is controlled with a single physical button and a scroll wheel. This may be a preferred input method for some, but it can offer less versatility.

The BitBoxApp and the Jade's companion software, Blockstream Green, offer great versatility and a variety of features. They're available on desktop operating systems and Android, with Blockstream Green being available for iOS as well.

The BitBoxApp also features a buying integration with our partners MoonPay and Pocket Bitcoin, allowing users to buy bitcoin in a straight-forward and secure way.
