History
The first Recorded European-American settlement within the present city limits of Marengo was in 1835 when land sales were completed for the construction of the Illinois and Michigan Canal. The community that developed around the canal was called Illinoistown. With the construction of the canal, Marengo became an important link between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River.
The Galena and Chicago Union Railroad arrived in Marengo in the 1850s. The railroad brought increased economic opportunity and growth to the city. Marengo was incorporated as a city in 1874.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Marengo was an important creamery center. The Prairie Farm Dairy Company (now Prairie Farms) was founded in Marengo in 1909. Illinois Cooperative Dairymen (now Dairy Farmers of America Midwest) was founded in Marengo in 1919.
