Margaret Mittelheuser was born on 25 July 1931 in Bundaberg, Queensland. She moved to Brisbane with her family and won a place at The University of Queensland at just 16 years old.

Mittelheuser graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce in 1952 and a Bachelor of Arts in 1973 from The University of Queensland. Her academic achievements paved the way for a successful career.

After graduating, Mittelheuser commenced work at the Commonwealth Department of the Interior in 1952, before moving to Sydney to join the stockbroking firm of Ralph W. King and Yuill.

At 16, Margaret entered the University of Queensland to study arts, but the dean allowed her to study only two subjects so she had time to pursue her other love, mathematics. She was an early achiever and a quick student.

Margaret enrolled in an accountancy course by correspondence and in 1949 decided to study commerce at UQ full-time, one of only two women taking the course. This was the beginning of her life-long dedication to challenging herself (and others) in fields not usually or easily accessible to women.

Margaret graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce in 1952 and a Bachelor of Arts in 1973 from the University of Queensland. Her academic achievements set the stage for her future success.

Margaret's first job after graduating was with the federal public service, but it was the arrival of a small inheritance from an uncle that consolidated her stellar career path. She invested the money in the sharemarket and was offered a job as a research officer at the stockbroking firm of Corser, Henderson and Hale.

Margaret Mittelheuser was the Founding Patron of Griffith Review.

She passed away on 27 December 2013, after a remarkable life and career.

Margaret's career spanned over fifty years, during which time she was involved in all the main areas of stockbroking.

She was the first woman to be registered as a stockbroker in Australia and among the first in the world.

Margaret made significant contributions to various arts and charitable organisations, including the Queensland Art Gallery and the Girl Guides Association (Qld).

She received numerous awards and honours for her service, including the Olave Medal and the Order of Australia in 1996.

Margaret was also awarded honorary degrees from the University of Queensland and Griffith University.
