Business Insurance Women to Watch

The Business Insurance Women to Watch program has been recognizing outstanding female executives in the insurance and risk management sector since 2006.

The program was initially established to highlight the achievements of women working in the industry, but many were still struggling to reach top management levels. Today, progress is being made, with more women being recognized for their leadership and contributions.

Jane Tutoki, the 2019 Inspiration Award winner, is a great example of this progress. She began her career as an attorney and went on to hold senior executive roles at various industry companies, including global head of claims operations for American International Group Inc.

The program has expanded over the years to include international nominations, particularly from Europe. In 2017, a separate awards program was established to recognize outstanding female executives in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Christine LaSala, senior independent director for Beazley Ltd., received the Icon Award for her work in promoting diversity in the insurance industry.

The industry is dynamic and risk-taking, but not known for its diversity, according to LaSala.

This annual event forces the industry to think about its talent and diversity efforts, LaSala noted in her keynote address.

The industry has made progress with diversity, but still lags, LaSala said.
