Kaleb is an 8 year old boy living in Northern California, who receives medical care and treatment at Shriners Hospital for Children in Sacramento.

Kaleb was born with a condition called Amniotic Band Syndrome, which caused restricted growth of his arm from the elbow down. As a result, Kaleb has yet to grow any limbs below his elbow. When he first reached Shriners, the hospital’s orthotics department immediately began working with him to help him live as comfortably and independently as possible.

In addition to receiving physical and occupational therapy at Shriners, Kaleb also received advanced prosthetic technology for his arm. Some of this technology includes an exoskeletal robotic hand that moves naturally due to modern advances in engineering and mechanics. The artificial skin on his “robot hand” even adapts to its environment automatically, becoming softer during temperatures higher than 86 degrees Fahrenheit! He also has access to body-powered elbows arms that are fitted with carbon fiber-reinforced shafts; these provide extra strength while still being lightweight enough for everyday use.

Kaleb recently celebrated a milestone birthday when he turned 8 years old—8 years since beginning treatments at Shriners Hospital for Children! He continues to make incredible progress on both the physical and emotional levels alike; he says that he now feels much more comfortable with what sometimes used to feel like an injured limb. Ultimately, Kaleb has demonstrated that age is nothing but a number; despite everything life threw at him before reaching 8 years old, he continues showing an inspiring level of determination every day!

How old was Kaleb when he first started at Shriners Hospital?

As any parent can tell you, taking a child to the hospital is never an easy experience. For Kaleb and his family, this was never more true than when they first took him to Shriners Hospital – but what many people don't know is that Kaleb has been visiting Shriners for over 10 years.

At only four months old, Kaleb was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). Typically, children don’t begin showing the effects of SMA until around six months old, but his doctors found anomalies on ultrasound images weeks before. It was confirmed later at Children’s Hospital in Utah that he had a severe form of Type 1 SMA, which meant he would most likely not live past the age of two without treatment.

Desperate for a better prognosis for their young son and all the possibilities medical progress could offer him, Kaleb's parents took their son to Shriners Hospital in Salt Lake City. After an exhaustive review process it was unanimously decided by the hospital staff that Kaleb had the right qualifications in order to move forward with clinical trials using Spinraza® (Nusinersen) at just five months old – one of only few amongst dozens of applicants that were accepted at this young age. This therapy not only changed his life and opportunity as well as hundreds of other families lives too!

Since then, nearly 10 years later Kaleb is still receiving regular treatments and care from Shriners Hospitals throughout Utah and Idaho. He has flourished under their care; learning new skills; breaking stereotypes about SMA; wrestling; playing sports; participating in theatre productions; running obstacle courses…all things people said he would “never be able to do". Through proactivity and determination he continues to prove everyone wrong as he celebrated recently turning 15!

So it was five months after his diagnosis that Kaleb started at Shriner Hospitals—an incredible journey for a remarkable young man who has developed despite difficult circumstances thanks to the valuable care provided by Shriner Hospitals.

How long has Kaleb been a patient at Shriners Hospital?

Kaleb is no stranger to the staff and physicians at the Shriners Hospitals for Children. He has been a long time patient since the early days of the hospital’s first location in Montreal, Quebec back in 1923. Today the hospital is comprised of twenty two locations in various locations across North America.

Kaleb began his journey to Shriners when he was taken to their Sacramento, California facility at just eight years old due to severe scoliosis in his spine. He was amazed by how well the patient care team had set up every station and aspect of care, giving patients efficient treatment options with as little discomfort or annoyance as possible. From that visit on, Kaleb has been making regular trips to Shriners proving they take care of their patients day one and throughout multiple visits afterwards

Kaleb’s mother told us that she feels like they never have any issues when they go down there, “it's tough enough managing all of our family’s medical needs but I am grateful for Shriner’s thoroughness and welcoming atmosphere." Moreover having access to so many doctors and specialists under one roof makes it easier on parents with busy schedules who don't want to drive from doctor's office to doctor's office with a child in tow for issue after issue every week. For example Kaleb can be seen weekly by an occupational therapist, physical therapist, dietician, nurse practioner etc...all from the comfort of Shriners Hospital!

Overall Kaleb has been a dedicated patient at Shriners Hospital for almost fifteen years now and is grateful for such incredible care he has received during that time period! Through this journey Kaleb's parents have been able to access top physicians who would be usually only accessible outside from children’s hospitals which provides them much needed reassurance?
