Now, running her successful thrift store is something close to a full time job for Brooks, as it has become a fixture in the area. With over 20 years of experience in selling items at swap meets and flea markets, Scott had always dreamed of owning his own store. He finally got his chance after meeting Ashley at one of his family's markets. As it turns out, Ashley had always had ambitions to open her own thrift store as well. It was fate when she bumped into Scott at that market, who was also anxious to start his own business! They connected instantly, pooled their resources together, and opened 2nd Avenue Thrift store shortly after.

2nd Avenue Thrift Store started its journey back in 1984 by two women with a mutual passion for providing people with affordable, quality items. Established by Eunice Lewis and her close friend Catherine Gaither, the two found success in their commitment to never wavering from their mission: to make secondhand shopping an enjoyable and informative experience. What began as a small corner shop in Atlanta bloomed into a vibrant store in three locations within the Atlanta area and throughout Georgia.
Arriving on scene before other thrift stores in the area, Eunice and Catherine weren’t afraid to redefine what it meant to shop thrift. Instead of highlighting size, price and condition of items, they relentlessly pursued offering unique products that would be useful for every type of customer. Whether it was glasses frames from 2018 or an old rocking chair from the 1970s, customers had plenty of fashionable options at a fraction of traditional retail prices. The pair even created what they called “EZ returns” which used specially designed inventory codes to speed up the transaction process and maximize customer satisfaction.
At 2nd Avenue Thrift Store customers were treated like family and always had practically endless options when it came to finding interesting items or previously-loved clothing pieces. Although both Eunice and Catherine are now retired, the cornerstone values that define the thrift store remain unchanged: good prices, diverse merchandise selection, top-tier customer service paired with a friendly atmosphere—hallmarks that have allowed 2nd Avenue Thrift Store to remain competitive for decades among today’s vast amount of thrift shopping destinations.

The 2nd Avenue Thrift Store is an initiative of the nonprofit organization Root & Rebound. Founded in 2014 by Danielle Belleny, Root & Rebound works to reconnect people affected by the criminal legal system to their communities through mediation, policy reform, and direct service programs.
Danielle developed a vision for Root & Rebound while leading a reentry legal clinic while in law school in 2013. Inspired by stories of individuals who were struggling long after release from prison due to unemployment, housing instability and interminable court debt, Danielle created this organization to drive systems-level policy changes and help maneuver individuals toward stability.
Root & Rebound's 2nd Avenue Thrift Store is just one of the ways Danielle has helped everyday citizens navigate emerging from incarceration and remove the economic barriers presented by banks when it comes to accessing skills-building opportunities after incarceration. The store helps those impacted by the criminal justice system reestablish economic stability with job training and employment opportunities for those who have been unjustly incarcerated or otherwise impacted by institutionalized injustice.
Since its inception, 2nd Avenue Thrift Store has grown into a place where people can find thrifted high quality items while supporting economically just practices that sustain communities harmed by mass incarceration.
