Gallatin is a city in and the county seat of Daviess County, Missouri, United States.[6] The population was 3,291 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Joseph, MO–KS Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The city was founded in 1837[7] and is named for former U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Albert Gallatin. Albert Gallatin was born in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1761. His family immigrated to western Pennsylvania when he was a young boy. He was educated in the United States and Europe. After college, he worked as a bank clerk and then a lawyer. He became involved in politics and was elected to the United States Senate in 1793. From 1801 to 1814, he served as the Secretary of the Treasury under Presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. He is credited with helping to finance the War of 1812 and he negotiated the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the war. He also helped to establish the Second Bank of the United States. After leaving public office, Gallatin served as a diplomat. He died in New York City in 1849.
