Van Eck Global History
Van Eck Global was founded in 1955 by John van Eck, who capitalized on the growing international stock market after the opening of Western Europe to US investors.
The firm's first major success came in 1968 with the launch of one of the first US gold funds, International Investors Gold Fund.
The gold market experienced a bull run during the 1970s and 1980s, but the firm's business slowed down after the mid-1980s.

By 1998, the International Investors Gold Fund had dwindled to $250 million, prompting the firm to shift its focus to emerging markets in Asia.
In the 1990s, Van Eck Global started developing its business in emerging markets, including a joint venture with Shenyin & Wanguo to tap the fund market of mainland China.
However, the 1997 Asian financial crisis turned off demand for emerging market funds, causing one of its funds, the Van Eck Asia Dynasty Fund, to lose 75% of its value.
The firm's assets under management (AUM) dropped 21% from $1.82 billion to $1.44 billion between 1994 and 1998.
Only the Global Hard Assets Fund had positive returns of 26% for the three years ended December 1997.
In 2006, the firm decided to enter the ETF business, launching its first ETF product, Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF.
This helped investors bet on gold through the stock market rather than directly, and it became one of the firm's biggest successes.
By 2009, the firm had issued more than 20 ETF products, which reached an AUM of $9.7 billion.
John van Eck died in 2014, leaving his two sons, Derek and Jan, to take over the firm.
Derek, the firm's chief investment officer, died unexpectedly in 2010.
