The United States National Bank of Galveston has a rich history that spans several decades. The bank was established in 1866.
Galveston was a major financial hub during the 19th century, and the bank played a significant role in the city's economic development. The bank's early success was largely due to its strategic location and the city's thriving cotton trade.
The bank's founders were a group of local businessmen who recognized the need for a reputable financial institution in Galveston. Their vision was to provide a safe and secure place for people to store their money and conduct financial transactions.
History of the Bank
The United States National Bank of Galveston has a rich history that dates back to 1874. The bank was founded by the Kempner family as Island City Savings Bank.
The bank's name changed several times over the years. In 1902, it became the Texas Bank & Trust Company. Then, on December 31, 1923, it received its final name, United States National Bank.
The bank's name change was not just a matter of choice. In 1926, the United States Congress banned the use of certain words in bank titles, including "Reserve", "United States", and "Federal". However, banks that already had these words in their titles were allowed to keep them under a grandfather clause.
The bank continued to operate under its new name for nearly 60 years. On May 3, 1982, Cullen/Frost Bankers, Inc. issued shares of stock that would eventually lead to the bank's demise.
In 2000, Cullen/Frost folded the United States National Bank charter into its flagship Frost National Bank. This marked the end of the United States National Bank of Galveston as a separate entity.
