Eligibility and Payments
If you're eligible for a 2024 stimulus check, you'll receive a notification letter, but no action is required to get the funds. The payment will be automatically deposited to the bank account you listed on your 2023 tax return.
If you've closed that bank account or didn't list one, the IRS will send a check to your mailing address on record. Payments will start going out this month and be issued to most recipients by late January 2025.

Your credit's value will depend on various factors, including your income, filing status, and number of dependents. Most taxpayers who were eligible for the previous stimulus checks have already received their payments, but one million taxpayers may have overlooked claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit when they were eligible.
The IRS is actively working to ensure that eligible taxpayers receive their payments, including those who are homeless, rural poor, or disadvantaged. The agency is expanding outreach to these groups and providing information in multiple languages.
Here's a breakdown of the eligibility criteria for the stimulus check:
- AGI of up to $75,000 for singles and married persons filing a separate return
- AGI of up to $112,500 for heads of household
- AGI of up to $150,000 for married couples filing joint returns and surviving spouses
Taxpayers who left the Recovery Rebate Credit field on their 2021 tax return blank or wrote "$0" may be eligible for the new payments. The IRS continues to work on getting these payments to eligible taxpayers.

State-Specific Payments
Some states issued rebate payments and stimulus checks in 2023, and the eligibility criteria and payment amounts varied.
In Maine, eligible residents received a $450 payment or $900 for eligible married couples. To be eligible, you must have filed a 2021 Maine personal income tax return as a full-time resident by October 31, 2022, and met specific income limits.
Maine began sending payments in mid-January of last year, and if you didn't receive a payment, you needed to contact the State Tax Assessor by June 30, 2023, to provide documentation showing that you're eligible for one.
Here's a breakdown of the income limits for each filing status in Maine:
In contrast, Minnesota rebate checks were sent automatically to about 2.5 million Minnesota households in mid-August of last year. The one-time payments of up to $1,300 came thanks to a $3 billion tax relief bill signed by Gov. Tim Walz last year.
Minnesota Rebate Checks
Minnesota Rebate Checks were sent to about 2.5 million Minnesota households in mid-August last year, thanks to a $3 billion tax relief bill signed by Gov. Tim Walz. The one-time payments of up to $1,300 were automatically sent via direct deposit or mail based on information from previous state income tax returns.
Eligible single filers with adjusted gross incomes (AGIs) of $75,000 or less received $260 rebate payments. Married couples filing jointly with AGIs of $150,000 or less were eligible for up to $520.
For each dependent in an eligible household, up to three dependents, another $260 was added to the rebate amount. Approximately 150,000 Minnesota tax rebate checks initially went uncashed and have expired since being sent.
The state's Department of Revenue reissued expired payments.
Maine Energy Relief Payments
If you're a Maine resident, you might be eligible for a Winter Energy Relief Payment. This payment was a one-time benefit to help with heating costs.
To qualify, you had to have filed a 2021 Maine personal income tax return as a full-time resident by October 31, 2022. You also couldn't have been claimed as an independent on another person's tax return.
The income limits for eligibility were as follows:
- Under $100,000 for single filers and married taxpayers filing a separate return
- $150,000 for head-of-household filers
- $200,000 for married taxpayers filing a joint return
Each eligible Maine resident received a $450 payment, with eligible married couples receiving $900.
Maine started sending out these payments in mid-January of last year. If you didn't receive a payment, you had to contact the State Tax Assessor by June 30, 2023, to provide documentation showing you're eligible. The State Tax Assessor had until September 30, 2023, to send a relief payment to each eligible resident who contacted them before the deadline.
The IRS may consider Maine Winter Relief Payments taxable, so be sure to keep that in mind when filing your taxes.
South Carolina Tax Rebate
The 2023 tax rebate program in South Carolina has concluded, and no similar program has been announced.
You were eligible for the rebate if you filed a 2021 South Carolina state income tax return by February 15, 2023, and you owed state income tax for the 2021 tax year.
Rebates were issued in two phases, depending on the date your previous South Carolina tax return was filed. If you filed a return by October 17, 2022, you should have received a rebate check.
For those who filed after October 17, 2022, but before February 15, 2023, a rebate check should have been issued by March 31, 2023.
To check the status of your rebate, use the South Carolina Department of Revenue's online tool.
