History of Rakub

Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank was established on 15 March 1987 through the Presidential Ordinance No 58.

The bank's headquarters are located in Rajshahi, and it was made specifically for farmers of Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions.

It received 253 branches of Bangladesh Krishi Bank in Rangpur and Rajshahi Division.

The bank worked with the Asian Development Bank to implement the Northwest Crop Diversification Project in 2003 to diversify crops grown in the Northern region of Bangladesh.

In 2004, the Ministry of Finance ordered the bank to reschedule loans to farmers in flood-affected areas.

The bank provided special loans to Monga affected farmers and offered 6.77 billion taka in agriculture loans below its target of 7 billion taka.

Ashraf Ali was appointed managing director of Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank on 26 July 2005.

The bank raised its interest rate from 8 to 12 per cent in 2007.

Former director Lutfar Rahman was sued for taking bribes for approving loan applications in August 2007.

From 2000 to 2008, the bank waived 180 million taka in interests.

The number of loss-making branches has decreased to 12, down from 60 in the previous year.

Deposit and debit balances have increased to Tk 7,180 crore and Tk 7,837 crore respectively, up from Tk 6,777 crore and Tk 7,587 crore in the previous year.

The balance of classified loans has been reduced to Tk 1,242 crore from Tk 1,430 crore, bringing the classified loan ratio down to 16 percent from 19 percent.

Through its 383 branches, Rakub operates in all 16 northwest districts of Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions, targeting the agricultural sector and its sub-sectors.
