History
The idea for the founding of PSD Bank emerged in 1872, when the imperial general post office encouraged the establishment of savings and advancement associations for postal clerks.
In 1872, 36 associations with 12,067 members were founded, which were financial institutions in the form of economic associations.

These associations gained legal capacity as corporate bodies in 1879, with a firm legal basis through governmental conferment.
By 1903, the advancement associations had become the Post-Spar- und Darlehensvereine (PSpDV).
The PSpDV associations expanded their business areas after German reunification, with the PSpDV Frankfurt am Main taking on Thuringia, for example.
Until 1998, PSD Bank was not a universal bank, and not all bank services were offered.
Only clerks and employees of the former Deutsche Bundespost, as well as their relatives, were accepted as customers and members of the banks up to that point.
The bank cooperated closely with the Deutsche Postbank or its predecessors Postscheckämtern or Postgiroämtern, allowing postal clerks to add an overdraft facility to their check account.
In 1998/99, all 21 PSpDVs were opened to non-postal clerk or employees, and the universal bank business was introduced by most of them.
The complicated legal form of an association led to a gradual transformation of the PSpDVs into listed cooperatives.
The banks took on the name PSD and dropped the labels "post" and "association" from their names.
Today, only 14 of the original 21 PSD banks exist, with Fiducia & GAD IT AG serving as their data center and IT service provider.
