Pimco is opening a new office in Austin, Texas this summer, which will be overseen by Patrick Feigley, head of US sales at Pimco's wealth management business.

The office will be the firm's third US office, in addition to those in Newport Beach, California, and New York City.

Pimco plans to build the office's staff to 200 employees by 2019, with around 50% of them in tech roles.

This new office is part of Pimco's increased focus on technology, which includes launching algorithmic funds and delivering other enhancements to help its human portfolio managers lower costs and source better ideas.

Emmanuel Roman, Pimco chief executive, said Austin will play an important part in Pimco's continued growth and that the firm is excited to become part of this vibrant, innovative community.

Pimco's current 65-person portfolio management analytics team will also take on new talent as part of its expansion into technology.

The firm plans to add consumer data to improve its inflation predicting capabilities, helping its managers better predict the consumer price index.

Pimco is also looking to partner with research universities to determine how managers can apply machine learning approaches used in other industries.

The office will have a significant technology presence but also other functions including US Global Wealth Management, Institutional Client Management, Marketing, and other business groups.
