The Nederlandsch-Indische Levensverzekerings en Lijfrente Maatschappij, or NIL, was a pioneering insurance company in the Dutch East Indies.

NIL was founded in 1897 in Semarang, Java, with the goal of providing financial security to the growing population of the Dutch East Indies.

The company's early success can be attributed to its innovative approach to insurance, which included offering policies that covered not only life insurance but also retirement benefits.

NIL's policies were designed to be affordable and accessible to the average Indonesian, making it a game-changer in the industry.

Istoriya

Nederlandsch-Indische Levensverzekerings en Lijfrente Maatschappij was founded in 1859 by CFW Wiggers Kerchem, who later worked as President of the Bank of Java.

The company's early success was largely due to its close ties with the colonial government in the Dutch East Indies, giving it a near monopoly until 1883, when other insurers were allowed to operate in the colony.

Nillmij was initially named SA Life Insurance Company NILLMIJ, and it wasn't until 1932 that the company changed its name.

In 1939, Nillmij expanded its operations by acquiring NV Java Hypotheekbank, further solidifying its presence in the Dutch East Indies.

The company played a significant role in the Dutch East Indies, constructing architecturally significant buildings in Jakarta, Semarang, and Bandung.

In 1952, the Dutch activities were expanded through a merger with the Life Insurance Corporation Arnhem, led by the mathematician John Engelfriet, who introduced computers to the company.

Electrologica, a computer business, formed as a subsidiary of Nillmij in 1956, and was later sold to Philips in 1966.

Nillmij merged with another insurance company, the First Dutch, and was renamed Ennia in 1969.

Ennia merged with Dutch insurer AGO to form Aegon in 1983.

Oprichting En Beginjaren

Aegon was founded in 1844 in the Netherlands as "Nederlandsch-Indische Levensverzekeringen en Lijfrente Maatschappij".

The company initially specialized in life insurance and annuities, which was its primary focus from the start.

This capital was used to cover the costs of the company's operations and investments.

The company's founders were Dutch colonizers who had a vision to provide financial security to the people of the Dutch East Indies.

They believed that life insurance and pension plans could bring stability and peace of mind to individuals and families.

The company's first office was located in Batavia, which is now Jakarta, and it quickly gained popularity among the local population.

In 1913, the company's assets had grown to 15 million guilders, showing a substantial increase in just a few years.

This growth was largely due to the company's innovative approach to life insurance and pension plans, which were tailored to the specific needs of the Dutch East Indies population.

By the 1920s, the company had expanded its services to include other types of insurance policies, such as property and liability insurance.

The company's success was a testament to the hard work and dedication of its founders and employees.

The Nederlandsch-Indische Levensverzekerings en Lijfrente Maatschappij continued to grow and thrive until it was nationalized in 1958.
