The London Stock Market is open for trading from Monday to Friday, with the main market opening at 8:00 am GMT and closing at 4:30 pm GMT.
The London Stock Exchange (LSE) operates on a continuous trading system, meaning that orders can be executed at any time during trading hours.
The main market is closed on weekends and on certain UK public holidays, including Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
The LSE also offers extended trading hours, known as the "Order Book", which allows for trading outside of the main market hours.
London Stock Exchange Hours
The London Stock Exchange (LSE) is open for trading Monday-Friday from 8:00 to 16:30 local time, excluding several national public holidays of England and Wales. This means you have a set window to execute trades and respond to market changes.
The LSE does not close for lunch, so you can trade continuously throughout the day. However, some exchanges pause trading for a lunch break, which can be a good time to reflect on positions and prepare for the second half of the trading day.
The pre-trading session for the LSE is from 5:05 to 7:50 (local time), and the post-trading session starts at 16:40 till 17:15 (local time). Keep in mind that not all brokers give access to outside trading hours, and there is less liquidity but higher volatility during pre- or post-trading sessions.
Here are the specific trading hours for the LSE:
- Trading hours: 8:00 to 16:30 (Monday to Friday)
- Pre-trading session: 5:05 to 7:50 (local time)
- Post-trading session: 16:40 to 17:15 (local time)
The LSE is also closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and other public holidays in the UK. If Christmas Eve falls on a weekend, the market closes for the afternoon, starting at 12:30.
