History of Isle of Man Currency

Before that, the island used coins. The Isle of Man Banking company printed the first banknotes, which were followed by various commercial banks, including Barclays, Lloyds, and Westminster, who issued their own 1 Pound banknotes.

The design of the first generation of banknotes, like the 1 Pound, 1865, was straightforward. The 1 Pound, 1936, features Westminster Bank Limited and the coat of arms at the top center.

The overall design of Manx Pound banknotes didn't change until 1961. The government took control of issuing banknotes and featured Queen Elizabeth II on the front.

The 1 Pound, 1983, design has been carried over into modern times and features the national symbol of the Isle of Man, three legs, in the center.
