By this time they are starting to become more alert and active, but are still small enough to curl up and pose.

A newborn photography session can last anywhere from one to four hours. The amount of time it takes really depends on how the baby is doing and how many breaks the parents (and photographer) need. Most newborns need to eat every two to three hours, so that will obviously extend the length of the session. And, if baby is not cooperative or is really fussy, it can extend the session even further. I always tell parents to plan on at least two to three hours for a newborn session.

Newborn photographers typically book up weeks or even months in advance, so it's best to book your session as soon as you have your baby's due date. That way, you can be sure to get the photographer you want and the date and time that works best for you. That said, some photographers do offer last-minute availability, so it's always worth asking!

First and foremost, newborn sessions take place in my home studio which is set up specifically for photographing newborns. It is warm, comfortable and has everything we need to make sure your baby is happy and content throughout the session.

I like to keep the number of people in the room to a minimum, so typically it is just the parents and myself. This helps to keep baby calm and ensures that we can get a variety of different shots.

We will start with some simple, posed shots of baby on their own and then move on to shots with mom and dad. I always encourage parents to bring along any special items that they would like to include in the photos (such as a blanket that was used when baby was born, a stuffed animal, etc).

I like to take a variety of different types of shots during a newborn session, so you can expect to see a mix of close-up shots, shots with baby in props, and family photos. I always send my clients a preview of the photos within a few days so that they can start planning which ones they would like to order prints of.
