Accessing historical intraday data with ease is crucial for traders and analysts who need to analyze market trends and patterns.

Historical intraday data is readily available from various sources, including exchanges and data providers.

With the right tools and resources, you can access this data with minimal effort and cost.

Downloading Issues

If you're experiencing issues with downloading historical intraday data, it might be due to the Data or Trading service Sierra Chart is connected to not providing streaming real-time or delayed data. You'll need to select File >> Disconnect and File >> Connect to Data Feed to cause a historical data download for the Intraday charts so they will be up-to-date.

The amount of historical intraday data you'll receive from the Data or Trading service server depends on the service you're using and how many days Sierra Chart is set to download. To change this setting, go to Global Settings >> Data/Trade Service Settings and adjust the Maximum Historical Intraday Days to Download.

If the server doesn't have all the intraday data for a symbol from the last time in the chart to the present, the Maximum Historical Intraday Days to Download is not high enough, or the server has less than the maximum number of days you've specified to download, then there will be data missing from the chart.

To retry downloading data, follow these steps:

1. If there's no data in the chart, it could be because the chart data file for the symbol contains no data or the Session Times in Chart >> Chart Settings >> Session Times are filtering out the data.

2. Update the Symbol Settings by following the instructions to Update the Symbol Settings. This only needs to be done one time.

3. Select Edit >> Edit/Download Data - Intraday Chart on the menu. The editor will not display any data if the data file is empty.

4. If the data file is empty, select Edit >> Delete All Data and Download. Otherwise, scroll to the position where you want to start the data re-download from and press the Delete and Download Data from Current Position to End button.

If you're experiencing issues with missing or incomplete intraday chart data, it could be due to one of the following reasons:

  • Retrying Downloading of Intraday Data
  • Mismatch Between Bar Close and Price Box on Right Side Scale of Chart
  • Incorrect Chart and Session Times Settings
  • Dates to Exclude
  • Symbol Not Trading for a Particular Period of Time
  • Invalid Symbol / Symbol Not Supported by Data/Trading Service

To improve downloading performance, it's essential to understand how Sierra Chart handles historical Intraday data. If you're connected to the data feed and an Intraday chart for the symbol is open, Sierra Chart will always download and store historical data.

To ensure you get the most up-to-date data, you need to select File >> Disconnect and File >> Connect to Data Feed. This step causes a historical data download for the Intraday charts.

If you're using SC Data-All Services, historical Intraday charts will be periodically updated without reconnecting to the data feed. However, if the data server doesn't have all the Intraday data for a symbol from the last time in the chart to the present, you'll need to adjust the Maximum Historical Intraday Days to Download settings.

To troubleshoot missing data, check if the data file is empty. If it is, simply delete all data and download again. If there's data displayed in the Intraday Data Editor, you can delete and download from the current position to the end.
