Banelco, a leading electronic payment network in Argentina, decided to revamp its corporate brand in 2011. They organized a design contest to find a new visual identity.

The contest received 93 proposals from professionals and students, which were evaluated by a panel of experts, including Miguel Catopodis and Ricardo Blanco. DAS Branding, a Argentine brand consulting firm, won the contest.

DAS Branding led by Hugo Fernando Alvarez and Luis Daniel Sobrado, developed the new brand identity, which reflected their interdisciplinary design approach and teamwork philosophy. The new brand identity was a significant change from the previous one.

Banelco's new logo features a more vibrant red color and a white "B" that stands out. The previous logo had more subdued lines and colors. The new design is a departure from the traditional and conservative approach of the banking sector.

The rebranding effort included a complete overhaul of Banelco's brand architecture, including its PagoMisCuentas payment service. The new design is a significant investment, with a cost of thousands of euros.

Argentina Visa Alliance Strengthens Payments

In 2013, Banelco, a large Argentinian Payments Processor, and Visa Argentina agreed to create an alliance to create new business in the financial marketplace.

The alliance between Banelco and Visa Argentina is a significant step forward for the payments industry in Argentina.

This alliance is a major step forward, especially in Latin America, where Argentina has had its major payments players embedded and established for many years.

The synergies, market shares, and efficiencies these two organisations have together are very powerful.

The timing of this alliance is wise, given that globally we are in a time when payments everywhere is disrupting, fragmenting, and chaotically changing.

Competitive threats are rising, and two incumbents joining forces gives the Consumers of Argentina and the payments individuals in it a stronger end proposition.

Examples of successful mergers and acquisitions in the payments industry include First Data & Global Payments acquisition and joint ventures globally, RBS selling Worldpay, and Scandinavian banks selling the regional infrastructure player Nets.

These examples have resulted in leaner and more commercially oriented organisations that are better positioned for the future.

The alliance between Banelco and Visa Argentina is a welcome development in the payments industry, where fundamental business value creation and decision making is once again prevailing.

The alliance is a good move for a stronger future, and congratulations to everyone in Argentina who made this happen.
