The Amsterdam Metro has made traveling a breeze with its tap-to-pay system. You can now easily pay for your tickets using your contactless bank card, credit card, or mobile device.

In Amsterdam, the metro operates from 7 am to 12:30 am, Monday to Thursday, and 7 am to 1:30 am on Friday and Saturday. The metro runs less frequently on Sundays.

The tap-to-pay system is available on all metro lines and at most stations. You can use your contactless payment method to buy a single ticket or a day ticket.

Getting Around Amsterdam

You can check in for your train, bus, tram, or metro ticket using your contactless bank card, phone, or smartwatch. This is made possible through OV-Pay, a new way to pay for your public transportation.

With OV-Pay, you won't be charged for going in and out of the gates at the stations without traveling.

You can hold your phone, smartwatch, or contactless card against the device to check in, and the fare will be deducted from your account under the name NLOV (Nederlands Openbaar Veroer).

There's no need to worry about being charged for going in and out of gates at stations without traveling, just like with the chipkaart.

Using Barcode Tickets

You can use a barcode ticket to check in and check out.

To scan your barcode, hold your telephone (with the screen facing down) about 10 cm above the card reader.

If you're travelling by tram or bus, check in and out by holding your barcode under the barcode reader.

Place your phone with the barcode facing up on the circle with the QR code below the card reader.

Payment Options

You won't need an OV-chipkaart or subscription to use the Train / Bus system in Amsterdam.

No registration is necessary, making it easy for visitors like you to get around.

You can use your iPhone or Apple Pay, no need to worry about having a physical card or registering a new one.

To use Apple Pay, simply select a card in the Wallets & Apple Pay settings under Travel Cards / Express Travel Card, and then touch the reader with your phone.

The Dutch system supports this feature, so it will wake up the phone and use the selected card automatically.

Don't forget to check-in and check-out to avoid being charged the maximum fare for a single trip.

If you're using Apple Pay, you can simply hold your phone up to the reader, no need to double-click or activate it manually.

However, it's worth noting that the express travel card option may not work in all cases, as seen in one user's experience in May 2024.
